I'll take "participate in a self-defense shooting anywhere in the commonwealth of Massachusetts" for $1000 Alex!

Probably very correct, but not what I was looking for. Think less legality and more fundamental. Out of my regular readers, you're one of a few I expect to figure it out. :-D

Ummm, he started talking with the hold-up guy.
    very dangerous.

There was a very famous case, a few years ago in NYC where this famous Psychiatrist was in his apartment when he heard someone ring the doorbell - buzzer. Not wanting to answer the door for someone he assumed was trying to sell something, he Ignored it. A few minutes later he heard someone fiddleing with the door lock. He pulled a loaded .45 automatic out of a drawer next to the door and as soon as the armed break-in guy came in he shot him dead at point-blank range. At the inquest, he was exonerated, via "self-defence" At said inquest he was asked why he, being a Psychiatrist and all, didn't try to reason with the guy and try and talk him out of it!
His reply: Are you crazy? You cannot reason with someone like that, in that situation, and besides then I would lose any claim to a self-defence justification, and be liable for a murder charge myself!
When you are assaulted by an armed attacker, you use equivalent force first and ask questions later!

No one seems to have figured it out yet. I'll give it another day. :)
