Some journalism students from my school went to Cuba back in 2004 and did a report. It's not as bad over there as, say, North Korea. I'd say conditions there are closer to that of Mexico. And they apparently have some very nice tourist resorts there that you can go to, unless you're American, of course(one of the reasons it's a hot tourist destination is because there aren't any annoying Americans there). But, the difference between Cuba and Mexico is that, in Cuba, you have soldiers on every street corner, and they will follow you for seemingly no reason at all if they feel like it. Cubans aren't allowed in the tourist hotels where foreigners stay unless a) the work there or b) they're accompanied by a foreigner staying at said hotel. And the hotels have hidden cameras in every room. If you're Cuban, it's a scary place to live, because people really do "disappear" for speaking out against the gov't. If I had to choose a dictatorship to live under, though, I'd choose Fidel over Kim Jong-Il, because I think Kim is crazier, plus he has nukes.
